5 Signs You Need to Replace Your Home's Windows
If you've had the same windows for several years, it may be time to consider calling a window contractor. Windows can deteriorate over the years in ways that you can't always see. That said, a window contractor can replace the old windows with new ones that function better. Here are five signs that signal a need for new windows.
1. They Don't Open and Close Easily
Are you struggling to operate the window? You might encounter this issue if something falls into the tracks. If that's the problem, it'll be easy to fix. That said, sometimes the frame and track deteriorate from age, making the pane permanently difficult to move. If you notice this happening, but the pane is straight and the track is clear, it's time to replace that window.
2. Your Home Feels Warmer or Colder
Over time, the caulking around a window can crack and shrink, creating small gaps that allow air in and out. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the gain or loss of heat through windows can be responsible for as much as 30% of the energy your HVAC system uses. With that kind of leakage, your HVAC system will have to work hard to keep the interior of the home in a specific temperature range. If you notice your energy bill climbing, you might need to get new windows.
3. You Feel a Cold Draft
Gaps in the window can lead to cold drafts even if the gaps seem minor. Whether you notice a distinct change in the overall temperature inside your home or not, if you stand next to a window in winter and feel any sort of cold draft, you'll know it's time to replace the window.
4. Your Dual-Pane Window Has Condensation
If you have dual-pane windows and see condensation between the two panes of glass, that means it's time for window replacement. The condensation is a sign that the surrounding seal on one of the panes has been broken and the interior gas has escaped. There's no fixing that, so a replacement is the only option.
5. They Don't Block Noise Anymore
Windows are capable of blocking sound to some extent. Dual-pane windows block a lot of noise, including traffic sounds, but single-pane windows don't do as good a job of it if you're exposed to lower frequencies. However, both types of windows do offer some level of noise protection. If you notice more noise from outside but the circumstances out there seem to be the same as always, you may need to replace that window.
